What ShortPixel Does
ShortPixel is an image optimizer, mostly used as a WordPress plugin. It compresses images as you upload them, can bulk-process an existing media library, and creates WebP and AVIF copies that it can serve from its own CDN. Outside WordPress, the Reducer API and a PHP client do the same job for any site.
Version 6.6, released October 6, 2026, adds AI-written SEO-friendly filenames to the AI alt text and captions the plugin already wrote. Renaming only touches new uploads or images not yet used in published content, so it can't break existing links. It also registers its actions as WordPress Abilities, which lets an assistant like Claude or Cursor check credits, optimize images and generate image SEO data through the WordPress MCP Adapter.

Why 100 free credits go faster than you'd think
A credit is one image or one thumbnail, not one upload. WordPress generates several thumbnail sizes for every image, and each one costs a credit. Creating WebP or AVIF copies costs another credit per file.
ShortPixel's own example: one upload with 8 thumbnails and WebP turned on uses 18 credits. At that rate the free plan's 100 credits a month cover about five uploads. That's enough to judge the compression, not enough to run a blog on. If you publish a few posts a month with several images each, you'll need Unlimited or a one-time pack.

Both plans optimize as many images as you like across unlimited sites, with 500GB of CDN traffic a month. The difference is how much AI you get. Unlimited includes 100 AI credits a month, shared across alt text, captions, background removal and upscaling. Unlimited AI removes that cap.
