Thinkific is a genuinely good course platform, and the thing it does best is the thing most rivals meter: courses are unlimited on every plan, including the $54/mo Basic tier. Teachable counts products. Kajabi counts products. Systeme.io counts courses. Thinkific doesn't, and if all you sell is courses that's a real argument for staying.
The trouble starts with everything that isn't a course. Basic caps you at 5 digital products and 1 community, and it has no course-completion certificates, no memberships or subscriptions, and no live cohorts at all. Recurring revenue isn't a feature you unlock later on that plan — it isn't there. The first tier that can sell a membership is Start at $109/mo, roughly double, and API access and webhooks wait until Grow at $219/mo. There's also no free version of Thinkific, whatever the search results imply: the pricing FAQ says so in one line and offers a 30-day trial instead.
So the real question isn't whether Thinkific is any good. It's whether the plan you actually need costs $109 or $219 a month when something else does the same job for less. I pulled the live US pricing page for all seven tools below on 2 September 2026. Where a tool has a review on this site I've linked it. I haven't run a course business on any of them, so this is a pricing-and-limits read, not a hands-on one.
Thinkific Basic is $54/mo, or $40/mo billed annually. For that you get unlimited courses, quizzes, student discussions, checkout, order bumps, coupon codes and a custom domain — a lot. What you don't get is memberships and subscriptions, completion certificates, live cohorts, coaching sessions or graded assignments. Every one of those sits on Start at $109/mo ($82/mo annually). If your plan is recurring access, the entry plan isn't something you grow out of. It's the wrong plan on day one.
The self-serve ladder is Basic $54, Start $109, Grow $219 — roughly double, then double again. Annual billing keeps the same shape at $40, $82 and $164 a month. Grow is where you get API access and webhooks, removal of Thinkific branding, invoicing, B2B seat sales and 3 communities instead of 1. That's $219/mo for a working API, with a branded mobile app a further $199/mo on top. Above Grow sits Thinkific Plus, which has no public price at all.
Thinkific charges no platform fee on any plan, which beats Teachable's 7.5% on Starter, Podia's 5% on Mover and Skool's 10% on Hobby. The wrinkle is in the processing. Thinkific Payments takes 2.9%, and if you'd rather run sales through your own Stripe or PayPal account, a third-party gateway fee gets added on top and it varies by plan. The 0% headline is accurate and conditional at the same time, so check which processor you're on before comparing it to anything else here.
None of that makes Thinkific a bad tool — the full breakdown is in my Thinkific review.
The closest like-for-like swap, if you can live with the fee
The cheaper sticker is real and so is the catch. Teachable Starter is $15/mo below Thinkific Basic, and a 7.5% fee eats $15 at $200/mo in sales. Past that, the cheaper-looking plan costs more. It fits if you're pre-launch or selling small volume, or if you go straight to Builder at $89/mo and take the 0% fee.
Full Teachablereview →Selling courses, downloads and a community on one bill
The broadest entry plan here for the money, and the one that treats a community as standard rather than a $219/mo upgrade. The 5% fee is the thing to model: it costs more than the $50/mo step up to Shaker once you clear roughly $1,000/mo in sales.
Full Podiareview →Running the whole business on one platform, if the revenue is there
Nobody moves to Kajabi to save money. You move because you're paying for a course platform, an email tool, a funnel builder and a checkout separately, and this is one bill for all of it. If you're on Thinkific Grow at $219 and buying email elsewhere, Basic at $179 is not the jump it looks like.
Full Kajabireview →Course design and assessment at the lowest sticker on this list
The flat $5 enrollment fee cuts both ways: nothing on a $500 program, brutal on a $29 mini-course. If you sell few, expensive things, Starter is the cheapest serious platform here. If you sell many cheap ones, price Pro Trainer at $99/mo with no enrollment fee before you commit.
Full LearnWorldsreview →One course, no software bill at all
This is the honest answer to "is there a free Thinkific alternative", and the one recommended least because a free plan pays nobody a commission. If you sell one course and want a funnel, a list and a checkout with it, the Thinkific bill is optional. Outgrow the free tier and $17/mo is still a third of Thinkific Basic.
When the course was really a community all along
If what you've outgrown is the single community Thinkific Basic allows at $54/mo, the course builder was never the problem. Circle inverts that: the community is the product and the course is a feature of it. It costs more and skims 2%, so only move if the discussion is where your value lives.
The cheapest way to put a course behind a paid community
The pricing model is the opposite of Thinkific's: pay almost nothing and give up 10%, or pay $99 and give up 2.9%. That's great when you're starting and expensive when you're winning. At $2,000/mo in sales, Hobby's fee alone is $200 against Thinkific Basic's $54 flat — so run the number on your own revenue before you assume $9 is cheap.
Full Skoolreview →It depends on which fee you'd rather pay. Skool Hobby is $9/mo and takes 10% of every payment; Thinkific Basic is $54/mo ($40 annually) with a 0% platform fee and 2.9% processing through Thinkific Payments. Below roughly $630/mo in sales Skool costs less all in, and past about $1,270/mo Skool's own math says Hobby costs more than its $99/mo Pro plan. Thinkific is the stronger course tool — quizzes, assignments, graded work — while Skool sells one product with unlimited courses, members and live calls at both price points.
Three, on the pricing page itself. The $54/mo Basic plan has no memberships or subscriptions, no completion certificates and no live cohorts, so recurring revenue needs Start at $109/mo. API access and webhooks don't appear until Grow at $219/mo, four times the entry price. And Basic caps digital products at 5 and communities at 1, where Grow allows 3. A branded mobile app is a further $199/mo add-on, and the top tier, Thinkific Plus, has no published price.
No. The pricing page answers this directly: there's no free plan, only a 30-day free trial of the whole platform. The cheapest paid entry is $54/mo, or $40/mo billed annually. If you want a genuinely free course platform, Systeme.io's free tier is the only one on this list — 1 course with 500 students, 2,000 contacts, 1 community and a custom domain, no card required and no expiry. Everything else here is a trial: 30 days for Podia and LearnWorlds, 14 days for Circle and Skool, 7 days for Teachable.
Systeme.io at $0 if one course is enough, and $17/mo ($170 for the year) when it isn't. Among paid-only platforms it's Skool at $9/mo, but the 10% transaction fee makes that the cheapest sticker rather than the cheapest bill. For a full course platform with no per-sale fee on the entry plan, nothing here beats Thinkific Basic's own $40/mo annual rate except Systeme.io — Teachable takes 7.5%, Podia 5%, LearnWorlds $5 an enrollment and Circle 2%.
Thinkific, on the entry plans. Thinkific charges a 0% platform fee on every tier and 2.9% through Thinkific Payments; Teachable Starter takes 7.5% on top of card processing of 2.9% + 30 cents in the US. Teachable's sticker is $15/mo cheaper at $39 against $54, and 7.5% wipes that out at $200/mo in sales. The fees match up only when you reach Teachable Builder at $89/mo ($69 annually), which is 0% on teachable:pay or its Monthly Payment Gateway.
Yes, and several will do the lifting, but read the caps. Podia migrates up to 50 products on Mover and 150 on Shaker. Systeme.io includes free migration on its $97/mo Unlimited plan, LearnWorlds offers done-for-you migration as an add-on, and Circle includes payment migration on its $89/mo Professional plan. Watch the student-side import limits too: Teachable Starter imports 5 students, Builder 50 and Growth 1,000. Video and page layouts are manual work everywhere, so budget real time per course.
