AI Image Generation Statistics 2026: 74 Data Points

ChatGPT users generated more than 700 million images in the nine days after GPT-4o image generation launched, about 78 million a day from one product (OpenAI, via TechCrunch). The rate most often quoted in AI image generation statistics, 34 million a day, dates to August 2023.

Key Takeaways

  • The most-quoted daily figure is a 2023 estimate, and the version now in circulation was never in the original. Everypixel Journal’s August 2023 post says 34 million images a day. Two pages ranking for this query in 2026 print 80 million a day and cite Everypixel for it.
  • One product, in nine days, matched the rate quoted for the whole industry. ChatGPT users made more than 700 million images between 25 March and 3 April 2025, about 78 million a day, against the 80 million a day that 2026 pages attribute to every platform combined.
  • Adobe’s two big numbers count different things. 16 billion was “generations” in December 2024. 24 billion was “assets” in June 2025, and Firefly by then spanned image, video, audio and vector. They are not one running total.
  • The market estimates disagree because the boundaries do, not because the activity is unclear. Fortune Business Insights and Verified Market Reports land well under $100 million apart on 2025 when both count image output only. MarketsandMarkets reads about twenty times as large because it folds video generation and editing into what it still calls an image generator market.
  • The Getty and Shutterstock merger is dead. Getty’s board resolved on 30 June 2026 not to proceed with the divestiture the UK regulator required, and terminated the agreement on 7 July 2026.
  • No court has ruled on whether training on scraped images is fair use. Andersen, Disney and the US Getty case are all still in discovery in September 2026. The one substantive judgment, in the UK, went against Getty on the point everyone quotes it for.
  • Provenance infrastructure exists and is barely deployed. The Content Authenticity Initiative passed 6,000 members in January 2026, while the Reuters Institute puts deployment at fewer than 1% of news images or videos published globally.

Top AI Image Generation Statistics for 2026

If you only quote four numbers from this page, quote these.

Four headline AI image generation figures for 2026: ChatGPT users made 700 million images in nine days, Adobe Firefly has produced 24 billion assets, Google SynthID has watermarked over 10 billion images and video frames, and the most-quoted rate of 34 million a day comes from a 2023 estimate never re-derived.

  • 700 million images were generated in ChatGPT by more than 130 million people between the 25 March 2025 launch of GPT-4o image generation and 3 April (Brad Lightcap, OpenAI, reported by TechCrunch, 3 April 2025).
  • 24 billion assets have been created with Adobe Firefly since launch, counting image, video, audio and vector together (Adobe Newsroom, 17 June 2025).
  • More than 10 billion images and video frames have been watermarked by Google SynthID across Google’s services (Google DeepMind, October 2025).
  • 34 million images a day is the rate most statistics pages still quote. It comes from a post published on 15 August 2023 whose figures have never been re-derived (Everypixel Journal).

How Many AI Images Are Generated Per Day

There is no reliable global count. What exists is one 2023 estimate and a handful of company disclosures that each count something different over a different window.

Everypixel’s 15 Billion Image Estimate

The most-cited number on this topic is a single cumulative estimate built from five per-platform components.

  • More than 15 billion images had been created with text-to-image algorithms between 2022 and 2023 (Everypixel Journal analysis, 15 August 2023).
  • That total was built from five per-platform estimates: roughly 916 million for DALL-E 2, 964 million for Midjourney, 690 million for the official Stable Diffusion service, about 1 billion for Adobe Firefly, and roughly 11 billion attributed to third-party Stable Diffusion platforms (Everypixel Journal).
  • The 11 billion component is the single largest input and carries no disclosed derivation. It is about 75% of the 14.57 billion the listed components sum to, and about 73% of the rounded 15 billion headline (Everypixel Journal, shares calculated from the published components).
  • The same post states that people create an average of 34 million images per day. Unlike the cumulative total, this daily rate carries no disclosed derivation on the page (Everypixel Journal).

Bar chart of the five components behind Everypixel's 15 billion estimate: 11 billion attributed to third-party Stable Diffusion platforms, about 1 billion for Adobe Firefly, 964 million for Midjourney, 916 million for DALL-E 2 and 690 million for the official Stable Diffusion service.

AI Images Generated Per Day by Platform

The company disclosures that do exist run far above the rate the aggregator pages quote for everyone combined.

Bar chart comparing per-day AI image figures: ChatGPT ran at about 78 million a day between 25 March and 3 April 2025, close to the 80 million a day quoted across 2026 statistics pages for the whole industry, and more than double the 34 million a day Everypixel estimated in August 2023.

  • More than 130 million people generated over 700 million images in ChatGPT between the 25 March 2025 launch of GPT-4o image generation and 3 April 2025 (Brad Lightcap, OpenAI, reported by TechCrunch, 3 April 2025). That is about 78 million a day across the nine days from launch to disclosure. OpenAI has published no image count since, so any later cumulative ChatGPT total is an extrapolation.
  • Leonardo.Ai users generated more than 700 million images in under a year, between the product’s December 2022 launch and November 2023 (AWS press release, 27 November 2023). Its total gets confused with OpenAI’s because the headline number is the same.
  • Ideogram’s free service had 1.1 million users who had created more than 75 million images in the six months between launch and its February 2024 funding round (reported February 2024).

AI Image Generation Market Size Statistics

Three analyst houses publish an AI image figure that can be read without a purchase. The spread between them is a definitional artifact, not a disagreement about activity.

AI Image Generator Market Size Forecasts

Two houses count image output only, and the third counts video inside the same market name.

Bar chart of AI image generator market estimates: MarketsandMarkets reads $8.7 billion for 2024 because it bundles video generation, synthesis and editing, while Verified Market Reports reads $0.48 billion and Fortune Business Insights $0.41 billion for 2025 counting image output only.

  • Fortune Business Insights valued the global AI image generator market at $412.51 million for 2025 and puts 2026 at $484.29 million (Fortune Business Insights, page last updated 24 August 2026).
  • The same firm forecasts $1,747.63 million by 2034, at a 17.40% compound annual growth rate across the 2026 to 2034 window (Fortune Business Insights).
  • Verified Market Reports sizes its Text-to-Image Generator Market at $0.48 billion for 2025 and forecasts $3.07 billion by 2034, at a 20.4% compound annual growth rate stated across the 2026 to 2034 window rather than from the 2025 base (Verified Market Reports, 7th Edition, page last updated 17 July 2026).
  • MarketsandMarkets sizes an AI Image Generator Market at $8.7 billion for 2024, growing to $60.8 billion by 2030 at a 38.2% compound annual growth rate (MarketsandMarkets, 13 August 2024).

Why Market Size Estimates Differ

Read the scope wording and the twentyfold gap resolves itself.

  • MarketsandMarkets defines its scope to include “Image Generation, Image Captioning, Image Manipulation, Video Generation, Video Synthesis, Video Editing” (MarketsandMarkets). Video revenue sits inside a market it still calls an image generator market, which is most of why its 2024 figure runs about 18 to 21 times the 2025 figures from the other two.
  • Fortune Business Insights defines the market as “a technology powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) that can produce images, artworks, or visual content without direct human intervention,” scoped to digital art, marketing visuals, architecture and content creation, with no stated video component (Fortune Business Insights).
  • Verified Market Reports scopes its figure to “AI systems that convert textual descriptions into visual content,” which is narrower still: text-prompted generation only, excluding image-to-image editing tools (Verified Market Reports).
  • Adobe’s FY2025 revenue was $23.77 billion (Adobe Q4 FY2025 earnings call, 10 December 2025, Investing.com transcript), roughly 49 times Fortune Business Insights’ estimate for the entire global market in 2026.

The two houses drawing an image-only boundary land within $100 million of each other on 2025. Adobe’s gap is definitional: it books AI usage as ordinary Creative Cloud subscription revenue.

AI Image Generator Usage and Adoption Statistics

Company-disclosed numbers are the most solid material on this topic and the most misquoted, because each company counts a different unit and changes what it counts over time.

Adobe Firefly Usage Statistics

Adobe is the only large vendor publishing cumulative counts, and it changed the noun it counts between 2024 and 2025.

Canva and Midjourney Usage Statistics

Both companies publish reach rather than image counts, so neither number is a generation figure.

  • More than 220 million people in 190-plus countries used Canva in December 2024, up from the 200 million reported in October 2024 (Canva newsroom, December 2024).
  • Canva’s AI tools had been used more than 10 billion times cumulatively as of December 2024 (Canva newsroom). That bundle includes Magic Write text generation alongside image tools, so it is not an image-only count. My Canva AI review covers the image side specifically.
  • Midjourney’s Discord server listed 18,614,981 members and 480,418 people online on 9 September 2026 (Discord public invite endpoint). Membership is not usage. My Midjourney review covers what the tool is actually like to work in.

Open-Weights Model Funding Rounds

The open-weights challengers report funding, not usage, so their scale shows up on a cap table.

  • Black Forest Labs announced a $300 million Series B at a $3.25 billion post-money valuation, led by AMP and Salesforce Ventures, putting total funds raised at over $450 million (Black Forest Labs, 1 December 2025).
  • The company’s Series Seed was $31 million led by Andreessen Horowitz, announced alongside FLUX.1 in three variants: pro, dev and schnell (Black Forest Labs, August 2024).
  • Black Forest Labs names Adobe, Canva, Meta and Microsoft as partners building on its models (Black Forest Labs), with fal.ai, Picsart, ElevenLabs, VSCO, Vercel and Grok reported alongside them (TechCrunch, 1 December 2025).
  • Ideogram closed an $80 million Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz in February 2024 (BetaKit, February 2024).

Bar chart of open-weights image model funding rounds: Black Forest Labs raised a $300 million Series B and a $31 million Series Seed, while Ideogram closed an $80 million Series A.

Marketer and Enterprise AI Adoption Statistics

Every survey in this section is vendor-sponsored, so the sample sizes and fielding windows matter more than the headline percentages.

How Marketers Use AI for Images

Media creation sits second behind text, and no public survey isolates image generation from video.

Bar chart of extensive AI use by marketers: content creation 42.5%, media creation including images and video 37.2%, administrative task automation 35.6%, from HubSpot State of Marketing 2026.

  • About 94% of marketers plan to use AI in their content creation processes, including blog articles, in 2026 (HubSpot). This figure carries a sample of over 3,400 marketers, not the 1,500-plus sample of the flagship State of Marketing report it is often bundled with.
  • In that flagship report, 86.4% of marketing teams say they use AI in at least a few marketing areas (HubSpot, n=1,500+).
  • Nearly 75% of marketers report using AI for media creation, including video and images (HubSpot).
  • Media creation is the second-most common extensive use of AI at 37.2%, behind content creation at 42.5% and ahead of administrative task automation at 35.6% (HubSpot, n=1,500+).
  • 61% of marketers say marketing is experiencing its biggest disruption in 20 years because of AI (HubSpot).
  • Coca-Cola’s 2025 “Holidays Are Coming” campaign involved around 100 people including five AI specialists, who generated and refined more than 70,000 clips, and chief marketing officer Manolo Arroyo said the approach compressed roughly a year of lead time into about a month (ContentGrip).

Marketing AI Adoption Stages and Search Impact

Self-reported adoption runs well ahead of organizational readiness in the same studies.

  • 26% of nearly 1,900 marketing and business leaders placed themselves in the Integration stage of AI adoption (Marketing AI Institute, 2025 State of Marketing AI Report, May 2025).
  • In the successor study, 53% of individuals placed themselves in the Integration or Transformation phases, while only 25% of organizations had reached the Scaling phase (SmarterX, 2026 State of AI for Business Report, roughly 2,100 professionals surveyed February to April 2026).
  • 47% of organizations were still Piloting and 28% still at the Understanding stage in the same study, and only 29% had an AI roadmap (SmarterX, 2026).
  • 74% of respondents called AI critically or very important to their organization (SmarterX, 2026).
  • 51% of marketers were already using generative AI, with 76% of those applying it to content creation (Salesforce Generative AI snapshot, n=1,029 full-time marketers, fielded 18 to 25 May 2023). This is 2023 data and belongs in a 2026 article only as the start of the trend line.
  • Nearly 30% of marketers report decreased search traffic as people turn to AI tools (HubSpot). I have written up what that shift looks like in the content marketing statistics roundup.

Stacked bar of organizational AI adoption stages in the 2026 SmarterX study: 28% still at the Understanding stage, 47% still Piloting and only 25% at Scaling.

Stock Photography and Training Data Licensing Statistics

Shutterstock is an SEC filer, so its licensing numbers carry an audit trail that private model labs do not have.

Shutterstock AI Licensing Revenue

Licensing image libraries to model labs is now a disclosed nine-figure revenue line.

  • Shutterstock generated $104 million in revenue in 2023 from licensing agreements with AI companies (reported June 2024).
  • The company projected $138 million for the entire business unit including AI licensing in fiscal 2024, and publicly guided toward $250 million in annual revenue by 2027 (reported June 2024). The $138 million covers the whole unit, not AI licensing alone.
  • OpenAI, Meta, Alphabet, Amazon, Apple and Reka were identified as companies licensing Shutterstock assets for AI model training (reported June 2024).
  • The Shutterstock and OpenAI agreement signed in July 2023 runs six years and covers image, video and music libraries plus associated metadata (Shutterstock, 11 July 2023).

Bar chart of Shutterstock licensing figures: $104 million of AI licensing revenue in 2023, a $138 million projection for the whole business unit in 2024 and $250 million of annual revenue guided for 2027.

Getty and Shutterstock Merger Outcome

The combined stock-photo giant that 2026 articles describe does not exist.

  • Shutterstock launched an AI Services line for model training and evaluation on 7 October 2025, naming NVIDIA, Meta, OpenAI and Runway as collaborators (Shutterstock, 7 October 2025).
  • The same announcement disclosed more than 2 million creators across 150-plus countries and 10 production hubs (Shutterstock, 7 October 2025).
  • Getty’s board resolved on 30 June 2026 not to proceed with the sale of Shutterstock’s editorial business that the UK Competition and Markets Authority required, and Getty delivered written notice terminating the merger agreement on 7 July 2026 (Getty Images 8-K exhibit).

No US court has decided whether training an image model on scraped work is fair use. The one substantive judgment anywhere went against Getty.

Getty Images v Stability AI Judgment

The UK ruling turned on trade marks, because Getty dropped its training claim mid-trial.

  • The UK High Court handed down its judgment in Getty Images v Stability AI on 4 November 2025, before Mrs Justice Joanna Smith DBE ([2025] EWHC 2863 (Ch)).
  • The court held that the model weights are not an infringing copy, finding at paragraph 600 that “by the end of that process the Model itself does not store any of those Copyright Works; the model weights are not themselves an infringing copy and they do not store an infringing copy” (judgment).
  • Getty abandoned its training and development claim and its database rights claim before closing submissions, acknowledging at paragraph 9 that “there is no evidence that the training and development of Stable Diffusion took place in the United Kingdom” (judgment).
  • Getty’s section 10(3) trade mark claim failed outright at paragraph 538, while its narrower claims succeeded only in part: section 10(1) for iStock watermarks alone, section 10(2) for both the iStock and Getty watermarks (judgment).
  • The judgment records at paragraph 608 that a January 2023 letter of claim asserted Getty content “said to be 12 million links” had been scraped, which is a pleading rather than a finding of the court (judgment).

All three US cases are pre-merits in September 2026.

  • Andersen v Stability AI has produced no merits or summary judgment ruling, and as of early September 2026 sits in an active discovery dispute, with plaintiffs moving for sanctions against DeviantArt on 1 September 2026 and a hearing set for 7 October 2026 (docket 3:23-cv-00201, N.D. Cal.).
  • The August 2024 order in that case ruled on motions to dismiss and let certain claims proceed (docket). It is a pleadings-stage order, not a decision on the merits.
  • Disney and NBCUniversal’s case against Midjourney, filed 11 June 2025, is also pre-merits and is currently fighting over production of training data, with a stipulation modifying that briefing schedule entered on 4 September 2026 (docket 2:25-cv-05275, C.D. Cal.).
  • The complaint alleges Midjourney earned $300 million in revenue and has 21 million subscribers (docket 2:25-cv-05275, C.D. Cal.). Both are plaintiffs’ allegations, and Midjourney is private and has never confirmed either figure.
  • The Disney plaintiffs seek statutory damages of up to $150,000 per infringed work, with an exhibit listing more than 150 works (docket 2:25-cv-05275, C.D. Cal.), putting nominal exposure above $22 million plus an injunction.
  • Getty’s US case was voluntarily dismissed in Delaware on 14 August 2025 and refiled the same day in the Northern District of California, where a motion to dismiss was granted in part and denied in part on 23 April 2026 and a dispositive motion hearing is set for 31 August 2027 (docket 3:25-cv-06891, N.D. Cal.).

AI Image Detection and Content Credentials Statistics

The provenance standard has broad institutional backing and almost no presence in published media. That gap is the most useful thing to understand about detection.

Content Credentials Adoption Statistics

Membership grows every year while the metadata itself stays nearly invisible in published news.

Line chart showing Content Authenticity Initiative membership rising from 4,000 in late 2024 to 5,000 in August 2025 and past 6,000 by January 2026.

AI Image Detection Accuracy Rates

Detectors that score well on their own training data collapse on recent generators.

Consumer Trust in AI Images Statistics

The Reuters Institute publishes sample sizes, fielding windows and a consistent method year over year, which makes it the cleanest non-vendor source here.

Public Concern About Fake Online Images

Concern about what is real online is rising while trust in news falls.

  • 62% of respondents are concerned about telling what is true from what is false online, up 4 percentage points year over year, with rises of more than 5 points in 11 markets (Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026, n=97,520 across 48 markets).
  • The equivalent concern figure a year earlier was 58% (Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2025, n=97,055 across 48 markets, fielded January to February 2025).
  • Trust in news fell to 37% globally, “the lowest figure since we started measuring trust in 2015,” after holding at 40% for three years (Digital News Report 2026).
  • Concern about fake news and misinformation is highest in Nigeria and Kenya, followed by the UK, Australia and Portugal (Digital News Report 2026).

Comparison of Reuters Institute figures a year apart: concern about telling true from false online rose from 58% to 62% while trust in news fell from 40% to 37%.

How Often People See AI Labels

Labels reach a third of people daily in some markets and almost nobody in others.

Bar chart of how often people say they see AI content labels daily: Japan 33%, Argentina 32%, United States 16%, France 16%, Denmark 12%, United Kingdom 6%.

  • Ever having used a standalone generative AI system rose from 40% to 61% in a year, and weekly use nearly doubled from 18% to 34% (Reuters Institute, Generative AI and News Report 2025, October 2025, roughly 2,000 respondents in each of six markets).
  • How often people see AI labels varies sharply by market: 6% say they see them daily in the UK, against 12% in Denmark, 16% in the United States and France, 32% in Argentina and 33% in Japan (Generative AI and News Report 2025).
  • Asked what they would use to check whether something was false, misleading or fake, respondents ranked an AI chatbot last at 9%, behind a trusted news source at 38%, an official source at 35%, a search engine at 33% and a fact-checking website at 25% (Digital News Report 2025).

Frequently Asked Questions

How Many AI Images Are Generated Per Day In 2026?

No company publishes a running total. The 34 million a day figure that dominates search results comes from an August 2023 Everypixel Journal post whose numbers have never been re-derived, and the 80 million a day version now circulating is attributed to that same post despite not appearing in it. The most useful anchor is a real disclosure: ChatGPT users made more than 700 million images between 25 March and 3 April 2025, about 78 million a day from one product.

How Many AI Images Have Been Created In Total?

There is no credible total. The largest company-disclosed figures are Adobe’s 24 billion Firefly assets as of June 2025, which counts image, video, audio and vector together, and Google’s more than 10 billion images and video frames watermarked by SynthID as of October 2025. Both are partial views of their own platforms, and adding them together would miss almost everything.

How Big Is The AI Image Generator Market?

It depends on where the boundary is drawn. On 2025, Fortune Business Insights puts it at $412.51 million and Verified Market Reports at a rounded $0.48 billion, both counting image output only, a gap of well under $100 million. MarketsandMarkets reads $8.7 billion for 2024 because its scope explicitly includes video generation, synthesis and editing. When two houses use the same boundary they land close together.

What Percentage Of Marketers Use AI Image Generation?

No public survey isolates image generation. The closest figures bundle formats: nearly 75% of marketers report using AI for media creation including video and images, and 37.2% call media creation an extensive use of AI.

Not yet, and not anywhere. As of September 2026 Andersen v Stability AI, Disney v Midjourney and Getty’s refiled US case are all in discovery with no merits ruling. The August 2024 order in Andersen was a motion-to-dismiss decision. The only substantive judgment, from the UK High Court in November 2025, held that Stable Diffusion’s model weights are not an infringing copy, and Getty had abandoned its central training claim before closing submissions.

Can AI-Generated Images Be Detected Reliably?

Not in the wild. A November 2025 benchmark found most detectors scoring between 1% and 12% accuracy against 43 recent diffusion models, despite performing well on the data they were trained on. Provenance is more promising in principle, with more than 6,000 Content Authenticity Initiative members by January 2026, but the Reuters Institute puts real deployment at fewer than 1% of news images and videos published globally.

Why Do AI Image Statistics Vary Between Sources?

Three reasons, in order of how much damage they do. Companies count different units, so Adobe’s “assets” and its earlier “generations” are not the same measure. Analyst houses draw different market boundaries, so one report counts video revenue inside an image market. And aggregator pages copy each other, so a single 2023 estimate propagates for years, sometimes arriving with a number the original never contained.
